Food is one of the greatest needs in urban America. Many students qualify for free breakfast and lunch at school but aren’t sure where dinner will come from. Some seniors struggle to have enough money after paying their bills to put food on the table. Government assistance can only help so much and there is still a large food gap.
With the help of our partners and volunteers, we’re fighting hunger together. We are doing our part to fill the food gap in Pontiac and Warren. January was a big month for our Food Pantries and we’d love to share the impact with you.
In 2015 our Food Pantry was established at the Dream Center of Pontiac and has grown to serve an average of 75 families weekly. On January 27, 2017 a record was set for the most families served through the Food Pantry in one day with a total of 96 families receiving food. In fact, January was our biggest month to date with a total of 351 families. That is equal to over 1200 people in just the month of January!
The Food Pantry has been an active part of the solution to helping hungry families in our Pontiac community.
January was a big month for the Food Pantry in Warren as well! We launched the pantry on January 27th and that week our team served 12 families. Our goal is to increase to 75 families weekly.
Many people would not have food on their table without the incredible generosity of our donors and volunteers who contribute financially and who sacrifice their time. In addition, our partnership with Gleaners has allowed us to compound our efforts and serve even more people.
Want to help? There are two primary ways that you can get involved and help us fight hunger:
You can donate a bag of groceries or make a financial donation toward our Food Initiative. This goes a long way toward putting food on the table and smiles on people’s faces.
Many hands don’t just make light work – many hands also serve many more people. Giving your time to serve will not only benefit those who you serve but will benefit your life as well.
